What is "Lingual Orthodontics"? - "Lingual" implies a direct spacial relationship to the tongue. Lingual Orthodontics is the correction of tooth misalignments by means of fixed braces attached to the inside of the teeth. The lingual technique is based on the same principles as conventional multibracket devices.
However, this technique poses considerably higher technical, material and time-based requirements for the orthodontists. It consists of small, silver-colored brackets, which are fixed to the insides of the teeth with a special transfer method. Lingual technology requires an increased degree of clinical experience and professional skills. Dr. W. Entrup has been working very successfully with this elegant treatment technology for more than 30 years and is certified by the European Society of Lingual Orthodontics (ESLO) - We currently use the world's smallest and most pleasant Lingual brackets system.
Spring clip system (A: closed, B: open in direction of the wire change in comparison to two older systems with a wire ligation
The spring-clip system achieves an unmatched orthodontic speed and comfort throughout the entire treatment period. The previously used lengthy fastening of the arch with wire ligation is no longer necessary. There is no danger for the tongue to interfere with a pointy wire end. www.gacintl.com (PDF)
Mark after 12 months of treatment with lingual orthodontics
Miss Germany, Caroline Nöding, after her treatment with lingual orthodontics
The braces behind the teeth are not visible from the outside. Especially for adults and professionals in the public spotlight this is a very attractive option. The treatment decision remains confidential and will obviously not be disclosed to the public.
Thanks to immediate display of gradual treatment progress positive aesthetic and psychological effect can be enjoyed even at early stages.
Another advantage is the higher level of hygiene since the saliva and tongue constantly clean these braces on the insides of the teeth. With proper care, the gums appear a lot healthier than with conventional brackets. The risk for decalcifications of teeth (white spots) is statistically 50 % less compared to normal braces.
Children who play wind instruments may normally experience difficulties in performance during the treatment period while wearing conventional braces. However this technique allows us to avoid precisely these problems.
Compared to conventional brackets , lingual appliances requires a considerably shorter treatment time by approximately 16%.
Due to its complexity and additional laboratory work this treatment technique is more expensive.
It should be mentioned that minimal problems with speech and eating may occur in rare cases. However, these problems disappear after 1-2 weeks of adaptation. We succeeded in reducing these problems by implementing our new smaller bracket system in may 2005.
In comparison with normal braces, the individual orthodontic appointments are slightly more time consuming (60 to 90 minutes) while the total average treatment period is less (15 months).
