Lingual technique with orthodontists Dres. W. & J. Entrup & Dr. T. Altvater in Hanover
The inconspicuous correction of misaligned teeth from the “inside”
What is “lingual technology”? -Lingual” means “on the tongue side” and the lingual technique refers to the correction of misaligned teeth using fixed braces that are attached to the inside of the teeth. The lingual technique is based on the same principles as conventional multi-bracket appliances. However, it places considerably higher technical, equipment-related and time-related demands on the orthodontist treating the patient. It consists of small, silver-colored brackets that are attached to the inside of the teeth using a special transfer method. Lingual technique requires a high degree of clinical experience and professional skill. Dr. W. Entrup has been working very successfully with this elegant treatment technique for over 20 years and is certified by the European Society of Lingual Orthodontics (ESLO) – Our lingual bracket system is currently the smallest and most comfortable system in the world.
The Spring-Clip system
The Spring-Clip system achieves unprecedented speed and comfort during treatment in the practice as well as during the entire treatment period. The tedious fastening of the arch with wire ligatures that used to be necessary is no longer necessary. There is no risk of the tongue being caught by a sharp wire end. www.gacintl.com (PDF) Picture right: Spring clip system (A: closed, B: open for archwire change, compared to two older systems with wire ligature
When eating or speaking, these braces will be “invisible” to the person opposite you.
Advantages of the lingual technique – KFO Hannover
- The fixed appliance cannot be seen behind the teeth. This esthetic advantage is an important decision criterion, especially for adults and patients who are in the public eye. Orthodontic treatment remains a private matter for the patient. As a result, it is actually a completely invisible appliance, which even offers corresponding esthetic advantages over aligner systems.
- This is also associated with a psychologically significant effect. The gradual progress of the treatment can be seen more immediately. You can benefit from an improved tooth position after just a short time.
- Another advantage is the improved hygiene of the appliance, as the appliance is constantly surrounded by saliva on the tongue side and the activity of the tongue has a cleaning effect there. Of course, this also has an advantage for the appearance of the gums on the outside. With moderate oral hygiene, the patient’s gums look much healthier with the lingual appliance. It has also been scientifically proven that an appliance attached to the inside of the teeth results in significantly less decalcification and so-called “white-spot” lesions in the event of inadequate oral hygiene.
- The lingual technique can also make this possible for children who play certain musical instruments (e.g. flute) and want to avoid a possible deterioration in their musical abilities during the orthodontic treatment period.
- The overall treatment time is shorter than with treatment on the outside or treatment with aligners, as the brackets can be attached very close to the tooth’s center of mechanical resistance with the lingual technique, thus enabling a more direct and gentle movement of the teeth in the desired direction.
Disadvantages of the lingual technique – KFO Hannover
- There are actually no real disadvantages! The special feature of lingual treatment for the orthodontist is primarily a more complex laboratory process and more demanding treatment management, which results in higher treatment costs for the patient.
- In a few cases, some sensitive patients may require a longer familiarization period of approx. one to two weeks. It should not be concealed that minor problems with eating and speaking (charming lisp) and irritation of the tongue may occur during this time, but these will disappear completely after the familiarization phase. Our new, smaller bracket system (see above) has significantly reduced these problems.
- Compared to the brackets on the outside of the teeth, the treatment time per session is slightly longer (approx. 60 to 90 minutes) if all the goals of the BALANCE treatment concept are to be achieved. We would like to motivate you to do so in any case.
